Hello fellow members, I thought about how we can connect more and become a more tightly nit community that simply our associations here in our Age Of Enlightenment Nation on the Vine. Thus for this I have registered and opened up an IRC Channel as a place to get together and chat, have general discussion, and get to know each other just a little more. As of right now the place is a bit empty and lonely :( , and I would love some company. You know, because the Red Sox lost to the Brewers and I need a shoulder to cry on!. So if your interested in cheering me up, or cutting larger holes in my Sox, you can follow the instructions below on how to find us on IRC.
INSTRUCTIONS A - The Easy Way To Connect!:
This is for those of you who don't want to download an IRC Client to connect to our IRC Chat. This of course simplifies the process for beginners who have never used IRC before. As we know, I am using DALnet as the IRC server for numerous reasons as noted in the comment section.. So for easy access, all you need to do is the following:
Step 1: Go to DALnet's Home page here: https://www.dal.net/
Step 2: In the Right hand side there is the "Chat Now". Simply type in your Newsvine Avatar / Nickname and the IRC Channel #AOE. After you do that, simply click "GO" and you will be warped through a magic wormhole only to find yourself in our Age Of Enlightenment Chat room! :):

INSTRUCTIONS B - Advanced using Open Source Client "Hex CHat":
This is for the more tech oriented user, and though there are other chat clients out there for more advanced users, I found Hex Chat to be simple to use while also far nicer looking than going through DALnet's web client. So here are the instructions for using Hex Chat to connect to the AOE IRC channel:Step 1. The first thing you want to get is an IRC Client that allows you to connect to the IRC. For this I recommend this freeware open source IRC client called "Hex Chat". To get Hex Chat you can visit their download page here: http://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html
Step 2. pick the Operating system you use (Window 7,8 or even XP and Linux versions are available), and download!
Step 3. Once Downloaded, feel free to start Installing Hex Chat. :)
Step 4. During your install, or when you first run the software you will see a dialog box / window titled "HexChat: Network List" as Pictured here:
And here you can select a Nick name, alternatives, and a user Name (I keep them the same). And in the same dialog box you have "Networks" to which is the server list. Here find "DALnet" and select it from the list. Once you select Dalnet, go ahead and click the "Favor button", and then check box "Show Favorites only" as this will then only display the DALnet server and make your next connection a breeze:
Step 5. Once you have your Nick name, user name, and Dalnet setup as your names and server of choice, Click the "Connect" button to connect to Dalnet!
Step 6. After you click connect a dialog box/window will ask you about joining a Channel.. Here you select "Join this channel" and type in that box #AOE and hit ok as pictured here:
Step 7. Once you have clicked ok, you will find yourself in the AOE Channel, and here is a quick tour (condensed) of what you will see in front of you so you know what's going on. This is of course Obvious, but I like to show everyone around the house anyways. :)
RED Box: This is the DALnet server dialog box.. If you select it, this is the screen you will see when you are not in a channel while still connected to the server. This Dialog box serves various purposes, and one of them will include using this dialog box to register your name on Dalnet itself so your, like on Newsvine, will be yours, and yours alone!. Hence you can set a password to which you can Identify with upon logging in.. I will be writing a tutorial on how this works and how you register your nick by Monday night.
Blue Box: This is the current channel, or list of channels you are in.. Hence this is the channel list. Right clicking your mouse over a Channel will bring up options in regards to that Channel to which include closing it and setting it to "Autojoin".
Grey Box: Time stamp column.. You can go into settings to turn time stamps off, but for me as an operator I have chosen to have them on. This box also includes citing who says what in the channel box whether or not you turn time stamping on or off..
Black Box: This is of course where all the chatter pops up, or better known as the channel box. Everything you say displays here.
Purple Box: This is of course the txt box where you type your messages others in channel, or commands to nickserv or Chanserv.
Green Box: This is the user list.. Everyone who's in the channel is listed here. You can note in this program that the channel admins are those who have a green dot next to their names. You can also right click over a user and send them a private message should you like to chat with them in a private query window. Though some options listed will be only functional to the Channel Admins.
Brown Box: The easy command center. The top 4 (OP, DEOP, BAN, KICK) are easy access operator/Admin commands while the bottom two (Send File, Dialog) are functional to all users. A little warning though, never accept file transfers or queries unless you know the person and unless it's pre-planned. Otherwise ignore anyone trying to get you to DL a file..
Step 9: Participate in the Poll! :). I've included a Poll to see if any of you are interested, or think I should just kill it like that spider in the closet getting into your shoes and favorite pairs of sox! :P Well, that's it for now.., and I hope to see all of you there soon!
Edit - One last note:
Just so everyone knows, this hasn't been approved by the other Admins.. As of right now it is something me and TiG were looking into and testing out.. So for right now, this is my own little pet project, or attempt at one anyway. All Admins here of course will have Admin access and control there.. It's important to also note that the newsvine COH rules do apply in the Channel as they do here. Cheers!
